Recognitions
The Board of Education recognized Shershonna Huff as the new Director of Human Resources.
Huff is a familiar face to MUSD as she has served the district for the last six years as the Executive Assistant to the Superintendent. In her new role, Ms. Huff will be responsible for providing additional leadership, resources, and support for all classified employees and will also serve as administrator for the Personnel Commission.
At the August 24th meeting, Santa Fe Computer Science Magnet School students kicked things off by leading everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. Eleanor Ridley and Winston Chien updated the MUSD Board on how their school started the new year and what they were looking forward to for 2022-23. Our Santa Fe students did a fantastic job!
Actions Taken by the Board of Education
The Board of Education adopted a resolution ordering a school bond election on November 8, 2022. The bond, Measure MM, would be used to update facilities, improve site security, update technology, and more for all MUSD students. The Board of Education approved a Consultant Agreement with Elevo for the Village Extended School Programs. Elevo is a company that has provided high-quality coaches to support Expanded Learning Programs for the past 17 years. Elevo coaches are trained to give after-school students enrichment experiences through Social Emotional Learning and Physical Activity. Elevo will help support the Village Academic Assistance and Enrichment offerings while providing the supervision necessary to maintain a staff-to-student ratio of 1 adult to 20 students.
The Board of Education ratified the renewal of the collective bargaining agreement between the Monrovia Teachers Association (MTA) and the Monrovia Unified School District from July 1, 2021, through June 30, 2024. This is the first CBA renewal in about a decade at MUSD.
The Board of Education approved an agreement with Food ED for an in-person STEAM Garden and Food Science program at the five (5) elementary school sites for the 2022-23 school year. Food ED’s garden and food science programs partner with grades TK-12 to build a comprehensive and cumulative science-focused experience that follows students through their learning careers.
The Board of Education approved an MOU between the Monrovia Teachers Association (MTA) and MUSD. The district will pay the assigned substitute the following rates for the 2022-23 school year:
- Daily rate: $190
- Loyalty rate: $205
- Long-term rate: $220
- MUSD retired teacher rate: $220
The Board of Education approved a contract with USA Alarm Systems, Inc. to install cameras at Santa Fe Computer Science Magnet School. The camera will help improve security around the school.
The Board of Education approved an agreement with Westgroup Designs, Inc. to perform the design, construction project management, supplier coordination, quality control, and implementation of new playground equipment at Wild Rose and Plymouth Elementary Schools.
Board members approved the purchase of classroom materials and supplies for the Femineer Student Program to support student learning. The program provides K-12 students with project-based learning, engineering mentors, and opportunities to visit Cal Poly Pomona while building a sustainable program for current and future STEM leaders. At MUSD, the Femineer program will be used to encourage female students to pursue science-based learning and careers throughout their education.
The Board of Education ratified an MOU with Santa Anita Family YMCA and Monrovia Unified School District to use the Monrovia High School swimming pool over the summer. The program helped teach kids from ages 3-12 to swim.
Staff Presentations to the Board of Education
Overview of the Basics of General Obligation Bonds - The Board of Education received an informational report from Piper Sandler regarding a potential general obligation bond and sample ballot language.
Revised Adopted Budget - The Board of Education received a presentation on the revised adopted budget for the 2022-23 school year.
Monroe Fencing Project - The Board of Education received a presentation on a school fencing project for Monroe Elementary School. This presentation highlights how new fencing can better secure the school site.
California IT in Education (CITE) Technology Overview - The Board of Education received an informational report on the results of the Technology survey distributed to district staff and received recommendations for the department.
Navigate360 - The Board of Education received an informational report on how Navigate360 can support school safety preparedness.
Public Information Officer Update - The Board of Education received a presentation highlighting the parent and community outreach work of the Public Information Officer.
Visual and Performing Arts - The Board of Education received a presentation on visual and performing arts across our schools.
